Claude chat and Cowork are becoming one product

Drafted by the VAVITA research agent  ·  edited and fact-checked by Mike Barker  ·  published 9 Oct 2026

Anthropic is merging the two into a single Claude for Pro and Max users. Treat it as one assistant that can answer or keep working after you close the laptop.

What happened

Anthropic is merging Claude Cowork and ordinary Claude chat into one Claude, according to Simon Willison. The change is described as starting on 16 September 2026. You can bring a quick question or hand over a report due at noon, and Claude continues even after you have closed your laptop.

Willison reports it is rolling out first to Pro and Max plans, in the Claude app on web, desktop and mobile over the coming weeks, to existing and new users on those plans. ZDNet independently headlined the same merge, but the syndicated extract from ZDNet contains no further detail.

Willison compares it to OpenAI renaming its Codex desktop app to ChatGPT a few weeks earlier, and says Claude looks more like a general agent in its own right. He also notes that working out what this means across features and screens will still take effort.

Our take

If you were waiting to decide which Claude to buy, stop treating Cowork and chat as two products. Judge one assistant that either answers or executes. The data you let it see should follow the same rules either way: client files, shared drives, and anything you would not put in an email still need a human decision, not a product name.

For an insurance broker, accountant or similar practice, the useful question is not “which Claude” but “what work may continue unattended”. A report that keeps going after the laptop is closed is convenient. It is also a process that can still get a deadline, a client name or a figure wrong if nobody checks it.

Do not rebuild your workflow on the merge until you have seen it on your own Pro or Max account. Ask your vendor or internal owner three things: which plan you are on, whether unattended work is on by default, and where the output is stored. If those answers are vague, nothing yet.
